The Top 14 Cybersecurity threats causing costly outages The web is constantly under attack, and when cyberattacks succeed, the cost is staggering. For every IT team and managed service provider, keeping the lights on, knowing what's coming and how to stop it, is critical. Let's talk about the top 14 cybersecurity threats. Before we begin, be sure to subscribe to NinjaOne's IT video hub, and our YouTube channel for more tech content like this. The Threat Landscape When it comes to cyberattack mitigation, there's good news and there's bad news. The good news is most incidents exploit the same basic weaknesses: unpatched systems, poor configurations, and gaps attackers have to find automatically. The bad news is those gaps are everywhere. Here are the 14 threats you need to know. The Top 14 Cyber Security Threats First, distributed denial-of-service or DDoS attacks. Flood your servers with fake traffic until real users can't get through. Defense: Mitigation platforms, rate limiting, content delivery networks (CDNs). Second, DNS hijacking silently redirects your visitors to malicious sites. Defense: DNS Security Extensions, redundant providers, domain locking. Third, SQL injection slips malicious code into your input fields to raid your database. Defense: Parameterized queries, strict input validation. Fourth, cross-site scripting plants scripts in your pages that run invisibly in users' browsers, stealing session cookies and data. Defense: Input sanitization, a strong content security policy. Fifth, cross-site request forgery or CSRF attacks trick authenticated users into submitting forged requests, changing account details, or initiating transactions without their knowledge. Defense: Anti-CSRF tokens, SameSite cookie attributes. Sixth, malware injections hide backdoors and cryptojacking scripts inside plugins and theme files, sometimes for months. Defense: File integrity monitoring, regular malware scans. Seventh, zero-day exploits hit before a patch even exists. Defense: Web application firewalls that block attack patterns. Rapid deployment of patches the moment updates are released. Eighth, brute force and credential stuffing use automation to hammer login forms with stolen passwords at machine speed. Defense: Multi-factor authentication (MFA), rate limiting and account lockout policies, CAPTCHAs and anomaly detection. Ninth, ransomware encrypts your files and databases and holds them hostage. Defense: Immutable offsite backups, hardened server configurations. Tenth, man-in-the-middle attacks intercept unencrypted traffic between your users and your servers. Defense: HTTPS everywhere using TLS 1.2 or TLS 1.3, enforced via HSTS. Eleventh, misconfigured security headers leave browsers unprotected against XSS, clickjacking, and content sniffing, even on an otherwise secure site. Defense: Set your CSP, X-Content-Type-Options, and X-Frame-Options headers correctly. Twelfth, insecure APIs expose critical data and business functions when endpoints lack proper authentication and validation. Defense: API gateways, strong token-based authentication, such as OAuth 2.0 or JWT. Thirteenth, unpatched CMS plugins are among the most common entry points attackers scan for and exploit at scale. Defense: Patch promptly, enable automatic updates where possible, remove what you don't use. Lastly, supply chain attacks compromise trusted libraries and packages to silently inject malware into every site that depends on them. Defense: Subresource Integrity checks, locked dependency versions using package-lock.json or yarn.lock, regular audits. Overall, the threats are real and the cost of inaction is measurable, but so is the value of being prepared. For IT teams and MSPs, building that resilience keeps the web running for everyone who depends on it.
